My data has gone back to 23% History Quality

Post by Graham Stewart »

I downloaded UJ and the data was perfect, my backtests were going very quickly and it was great to use. Then I started to download other pairs and for some reason its like the data didn't go onto the MT5 I was using. The tests were very very slow and it kept telling me that my data was only at 23% History Quality. I'm very confused to why this is happening because I'm downloading them all the same way. I then tried to download another pair where I said I wanted to export to MT5 and that didn't seem to do anything either.

Any help you could give me would be much appreciated.

Hi Graham,

Just to confirm that you are using this guide to import into MT5? After importing, did you check the tick and bar data appears correctly in MT5's History center?

Thanks.

Hi, ok some of that i didn't do, what was surprising is I didn't do it for UJ but it seemed to automatically export to my mt5 platform. The problem I have now is I followed the instructions of the video and had a problem at the point where I had to export the data. I go to View-Symbols, I select 'Bars' but the 'import tab is gray and won't let me select it. I clicked on 'create custom symbol (the only tab available for me to select) and clicked 'import' on there, I then wat taken to MQL5 to try to find the file. I went to Tickstory and said I wanted to export the file C:\Users\User\Documents\{Symbol}.csv, this is what I got (I have no idea at all if this is the right thing to do), when I tried to follow that trail there was nothing. So the main problem I have now is I've downloaded the data (I actually downloaded as much as tick data not sure if I should have done that), I don't know where the data is and when I go to symbol and bars I am not being given the option it import the bars.

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Hi Graham,

It appears you are missing some steps. If you scroll down on the instructional page mentioned above, you will see there is a detailed list of steps just below the YouTube video. Please follow the steps carefully, in particular Step 3 which details the part you are trying to complete. The reason the "Import" button in the Bars tab is grayed out is because you likely have not selected a symbol to import the data into (see screenshot).

Also, it appears you are confusing the "Import" button on the "Specification" tab which imports a custom symbol (*.json file), as opposed to the Import button on the Bar and Tick tabs which imports the data you produced with Tickstory (i.e. *.csv files).

The descriptive guide will hopefully provide the information and screenshots you need.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for getting back to me, I think I've managed to do most of it (maybe wrong) but it doesn't seem to be working yet. I created a GBPUSD_tickstory custom symbol, I think I downloaded the data for it, I downloaded files from my documents folder, it said it was GBPUSD_mt4_ticks.csv, the size was 227.219KB, it seems to have all the data there. it seemed to download it, then when I went to test I just got a instant squeaky noise that kind of showed that it wasn't working. I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong. If I can add some screen shots I will show you where I'm at.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

y I can see that one of the SS that I sent didn't have that data in it. This image that I'm sending I think shows that it has the bar data for 10 years. I'm not sure why its not working.

Hi Graham,

Notice on your last screenshot it says "100000 bars, limited by chart settings". This means that not all data is shown. You can change your chart settings in MT5 so it shows more of the data but for the most part, it looks like the 1-minute bar data is there.

As for the tick data file size (EURUSD*_ticks.csv), it should be much larger than 227kb for 10 years of data. Make sure you have exported ticks from Tickstory by going to MT5 Export->Ticks (the default filename is named *_ticks.csv). Of course, this *_ticks.csv file needs to be imported into MT5 via the Ticks tab. As before, you will not be able to view all the data in the UI because it is usually too large to display 10 years of data. Instead, just spot check a few days from 2014 and 2024 to make sure some data appears.

If your MT5 is still "squeaking" during the back-test after doing all the above, please check your Journal tab which provides you with further information about what occurred during the back-test.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your help, I have managed to get some of it working. I tried to download another pair (EJ), I'm pretty sure I downloaded it like I would anything else. It seemed to work, I watched it on visual mode and the PA was playing through, it just didn't take any trades, can you give me any advice at all to why that might be the case? It says that the data has 100% history quality but it won't take a trade. I'm using the same setting that I've used on the other pairs.

Just to add, I tested UJ and it seems to have a problem as well. GU is having some error messages but it seems to actually be taking trades. UJ used to test fine, it doesn't have the same error messages like EJ does but it also doesn't seem to be taking any trades. They all say they have 100% historical data.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Hi Graham,

Good to hear that you are getting 100% modelling quality. This means that the only issue now is trouble-shooting your EA and why it won't trade. Unfortunately we can't help you with the actual EA but we can give you some generic points to look for:

- In your Journal, you seem to be getting a "Market closed" message. Is this the reason for your EA not trading? Maybe try when the market is open?
- Try a MT5-supplied EA to prove that the back-test is working (you already have partially done this with your own EA but using a simple EA might help you understand a bit more).
- Try tweaking any settings on your EA to see if you can make it trade such as increasing any spread thresholds.

You can check out this answer in our FAQ which might help further.

Thanks.
